Unravelling  the mystery of fluctuating water levels at the world heritage-protected Thirlmere Lakes is the goal of a recently started research project.

Data from a water monitoring project started in 2014 showed that the five lakes respond to local rainfall but the exact cause of the fluctuations remains unknown.
