TRADITIONAL owner groups will extract as much business as possible while Gove’s Rio Tinto alumina refinery is dismantled, but are acutely aware of the long-term pain which may follow.

The NT News yesterday revealed mining heavyweight Rio Tinto’s decision to end the “care and maintenance” mode of the East Arnhem refinery, which had been in place since the plant’s operations were mothballed and 1100 jobs cut in 2013. This call means the plant will never be reopened.
